Princess Mary takes to hats like a royal born

Australian-born Princess Mary of Denmark is definitely getting to grips with the regal tradition of hat-wearing, if an ensemble sported at a visit to Denmark's Legoland is anything to go by.

While the adoption of titfers by non-royals tends to be restricted to weddings and upmarket horse-racing events, Denmark's trendy new royal has bowed to tradition it seems when it comes to donning one for official events.

Since taking up royal duties following her marriage to Prince Frederik in May 2004, the former real-estate agent has varied her headgear from wide-brimmed sombrero styles to dramatic design statements. And the cheeky cloche shape which she sported during this week's Legoland outing with husband Frederik seems to be a particular favourite; a similar style also having been given an airing at a pre-wedding Navy parade in Copenhagen.

This week's version, in white, was teamed with a short, Nehru-collar jacket, a white flouncy retro skirt with large box pleats and strappy, pointed-toe pumps. The effect was striking and sure to win the much-lauded princess even further plaudits in the fashion stakes.
