Sophie enchanted by animal magic

The Countess of Wessex was clearly entranced by her encounter with a variety of furry friends this week. Visiting the Wood Green Animal Shelter, the 41-year-old royal was supposed to be cutting the ribbon at a new facility to house abandoned cats, but couldn't resist giving a little attention to the centre's handsome pooches as well.

Tender-hearted Sophie stopped to pet a white-haired dog under the chin, whispering a few words to the canine, one of 8,000 animals that pass through the refuge each year. Wherever Prince Edward's wife went she took a similarly hands-on approach, lavishing cuddles on horses, kittens, and even a tiny racoon.

And if Sophie were tempted to take home one of her new pals as a companion for her two-year-old daughter, Lady Louise, the Cambridgeshire centre would be the perfect place to look. Over 80 per cent of the four-legged creatures, which include llamas and guinea pigs, eventually find caring owners.

Sophie, who is known for having a soft spot when it comes to children, is obviously very fond of animals, too. The royal was inaugurating a new wing for cats at the refuge, which welcomes 8,000 animals a yearPhoto: © Rex
