The royal family were in high spirits for Saturday's Trooping the Colour to mark the Queen's official birthday. Despite the day's pomp and circumstance, the monarch's relatives enjoyed some lighter moments on the balcony of Buckingham palace. At one point Prince Harry dissolved into laughter accompanied by Princess Anne and Prince Philip, who seemed to share the source of amusement.

The group regained their composure, however, as they watched an RAF flypast of 49 aircraft in the Queen's honour. Her Majesty was clearly delighted by the day's celebrations which also included a 'Fire of Joy' salute by 400 soldiers, last performed in 1927.

Harry, who has now earned the title of Cornet Wales of the Blues and Royals, cut a dashing figure at the Palace. Arriving in a carriage with cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, he wore military dress for the first time at the parade. His older brother Prince William was missing from the gathering because of commitments at Sandhurst, followed by a charity polo match which he attended with girlfriend Kate Middleton.

While the Windsor men wore military uniforms, the ladies were getting in some practice for Ascot with their array of hats. The Queen led the way in a structured violet creation which matched her coat, while her teenage granddaughters Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice donned stylish feathered headpieces. The Countess of Wessex also looked elegant in her choice of millinery - a towering display of white roses and feathers.
