Aussie-born Princess Mary and her husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark have announced that they are to become parents for a second time. The royal newcomer will be a brother or sister for their son Prince Christian who celebrated his first birthday on October 15 this year.

According to a statement issued by Amalienborg Palace, Mary is expected to give birth at Copenhagen's University hospital Rigshospitalet in the beginning of May next year – around the time the couple will be celebrating their third wedding anniversary.

"The Crown Princess will continue to fulfil her official duties as long as possible," it added. The news will thrill royal watchers in both Denmark and Mary's native Australia - where the couple met at the Sydney Olympics.

Princess Mary is not the only expectant royal mum. Princess Letizia of Spain and the Netherlands' Princess Maxima are also due to become mums again.
