Denmark's Princess Mary puts best fashion foot forward in Washington

04 JUNE 2010

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is always one of the most sartorially savvy royals and has proved it again as she and husband Crown Prince Frederik began a five-day state visit to the US capital on Thursday.

Mary started her day on chic but traditional form, wearing a ruffled blouse and blue patterned pencil skirt when she and Frederick – who coordinated in a light grey suit - met with students at a local elementary school.

The parents of adorable four-year-old Prince Christian and Princess Isabella, 3, seemed thrilled to be with the young schoolchildren, who performed a traditional Danish song for them.

In the evening, Mary demonstrated that she can be a style success in any kind of ensemble, as she changed into a flirty, summertime look for the opening of The Wild Swans museum exhibition at the Meridian International Center.

The Australian-born princess stepped out in a pretty floral frock and tan Christian Louboutin pumps, and completed her look with loosely plaited locks, one of the biggest celebrity hair trends this season.

The Wild Swans was inaugurated by Frederick's younger brother, Prince Joachim, and his wife Marie in Mexico in March. It features the costumes and props that Queen Margrethe designed for the Danish film of the same name.

During their stay in Washington, Frederick and Mary will participate in a number of cultural events, many of which are related to the 50th anniversary celebration of the city's Danish embassy.
