And long before sending her first email – she was the first monarch with an email address in 2007 – she seemed in tune with the possibilities of using technology to carry out her role.
She was instrumental in broadcasting her Christmas message in TV, in 1957, expressing the hope that the "new medium" would bring her closer to her subjects.
"It is inevitable that I should seem a remote figure to many of you, a successor to the kings and queens of history," she said in that first televised message.
"Someone whose face is familiar in newspapers and films, but who never really touches your personal lives. But now, at least for a few minutes. I welcome you to the peace of my own home"
