Princess Marie of Denmark makes a splash as a firefighter

Denmark's glamorous Princess Marie swapped her finery for firefighting gear during a recent engagement. The royal rolled up her sleeves and donned a protective suit as she lent her profile to an Emergency Services campaign at Tonder Grundskole primary school. Despite the rain and cold, groups of excited young pupils waved Danish flags and made sure their princess received a warm welcome.

Once the engagement was underway, Marie – who is affiliated with the Emergency Management Agency and underwent training in 2011 – wasted no time showing her young charges how to deal with fires. Under the watchful eye of professionals, the princess and students handled equipment and came face-to-face with flames. Marie – who is mum to three-year-old Henrik and Athena, now ten months – was a natural with the youngsters who worked by her side.

The engagement was a fun departure from the more formal royal duties that the French-born brunette usually carries out. Royal watchers are used to seeing Marie professionally attired while working for her many patronages, which include the Danish branch of UNESCO. However, her day as a firewoman showed Prince Joachim's wife's spontaneous side.
