What happens when a millionaire marries a billionaire? Well we'll find out on Friday when pop icon Taylor Swift ties the knot with NFL star Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in New York. While both parties are incredibly wealthy, Forbes has Taylor's estimated net worth north of $2.1 billion; meanwhile, Travis' net net worth sits at around $90 million. With this discrepancy, will there be a prenup?
What is a prenup?
The term 'prenup' is short for prenuptial agreement - a contract signed by couples before they marry to clearly set out how assets and finances will be divided if the relationship ends in divorce, separation, or death.
Because celebrities have huge amounts of wealth to deal with and often also have complex assets, prenups are fairly common to protect both parties. The agreement can even have specific clauses relating to cheating or drug abuse to put strict conditions on the arrangements.
Is Taylor Swift getting a prenup?
The "Blank Space" hitmaker is in her thriving era; her single "The Fate of Ophelia" stayed top of the charts for nine whole weeks and she made history by becoming the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. At the top of her game, Taylor's fortune is amassing at a rapid rate and, of course, she'll be keen to protect that. Plus, a prenup can cover future royalties and intellectual property too. So it is likely that the singer's legal team, who helped her win the rights to her own songs, will be advising her to have an iron-clad prenup in place. However, Taylor herself has not spoken out about the situation.
Will the couple sign an NDA?
If they do enter into a prenuptial agreement, an NDA could also be signed. This will prevent either of them from speaking about the relationship after a potential split. But with Taylor's music built on the ups and downs of her love life, there's a chance that this deal could be kissing goodbye to future hits.
A star-studded wedding
Whatever the legalities ahead of the big day, one thing is for sure: we know it's going to be a huge wedding day with a never-ending celebrity guest list. Taylor is known for having many celebrity pals, and Travis will likely bring a whole host of sporting stars to the occasion. Plus, it's been reported that Taylor's close friend Ed Sheeran will actually be performing for the happy couple.
During an appearance on Hits Radio Breakfast Show, she was asked whether Ed would perform on her big day. She replied: "I mean, it would be hard to keep him from it, I think! That's the thing, he's like, 'I'm always being asked to sing at weddings,' and you're like, 'Ed, if there's a stage, you know that you'll be on it!'"
She added: "He knows what people want and he wants to give people what they want. That's the fun thing about our friendship is we both love performing, and we love writing, and we love singing. It's actually not that hard to talk either of us into performing at anything!"
