Clean cut Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor after a Wednesday morning brawl at a Tampa, Florida, nightclub. Though he wasn’t involved in the ruckus itself, Nick refused to cooperate with police and could face up to one year in jail.

According to sources, Nick and a group of friends were celebrating at the Pop City nightclub, when police arrived at 3:20am to break up a fight. As officers arrested five clubbers involved in the incident – the second time that evening that police were called to the night spot to handle a disturbance – they saw Nick involved in a loud argument with an unidentified woman.

Police reports say the officers first told the Backstreet star to quiet down, then advised him to “leave by the count of three” or be arrested. Nick refused to cooperate and ended up in handcuffs.

“The defendant was told to leave over ten times… he continued the argument and would not leave and was arrested without incident,” say police. Nick’s behaviour earned him a charge of resisting a law officer without violence, an offence which carries a sentence of up to one year in jail and a $500 fine.

The pop star was released on his own recognizance, and a court date has been scheduled for March 4. Both the club and Nick’s representative declined to comment on the incident.
