For the three years since the launch of the Dubai tennis tournament, the event has been a prime opportunity for the world's top tennis players to experience the culture and customs of the United Arab Emirates. And this week, as the women's championships kicked off, top court stars Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles didn't hesitate in the least to get into the spirit of the occasion.

Hours before the gruelling tournament began, the ladies had a chance to don beautiful gold headdresses and abayas – the traditional Middle Eastern robe – as they enjoyed some of the Emirates' sights and sounds. Jennifer Capriati enthusiastically accompanied a performer demonstrating local dance steps and later got a closer look at an enormous falcon, which perched on her arm.

Twenty-nine-year-old Monica Seles also had a chance to enjoy some local craftsmanship during a visit to the Majilis Art Gallery. "I simply love it here, and my mum loves it too," she said, adding: "Being here is like planning a mini holiday. Other than the tennis, it's a good break."

The Dubai tennis championship continues until March 2.
