Madonna takes custody of her new son in Malawi

Madonna's children Lourdes and Rocco have a new little brother today after the Queen of Pop adopted an 18-month-old boy in Malawi. Ongoing rumours that the iconic singer was set to make a new addition to her family were confirmed after the country's High Court approved an application paving the way for her to take custody of the infant.

Little David Banda, whose mother died after giving birth, was born in a mud hut in the remote village of Lipunga. The infant is unlikely to be aware of just how different his life will be after he travels back to London with the Material Girl and her British husband Guy Ritchie, though.

The child has spent the first 18 months of his life at the Home of Hope orphanage 120 miles west of the capital Lilongwe. And his father Yohame, who was present for the court proceedings, confessed that he had never heard of Madonna. The 32-year-old said he was much taken with the singer and her husband when they met, however, and was pleased his son was being given the chance to escape the grinding poverty of their homeland.

"They are a lovely couple," he affirmed. "She asked me many questions. She and her husband seem happy with David. I am happy for him. Madonna promised me that as the child grows she will bring him back to visit."

A teacher at the rural children's home meanwhile revealed the American chanteuse was equally charmed by David when they first met last Friday. "She was carrying the baby," she explained. "She was smiling and she was saying 'ah, beautiful'." The 48-year-old performer is expected to arrive back in the UK, along with Guy and their new son, on Friday evening.
