Shrek's Scottish roots honoured at UK premiere

Bearing in mind his height - 7ft - and his 102-inch waist, creating a kilt for animated ogre Shrek was always going to be no mean feat. But that's exactly what Scottish kilt manufacturer Locharron did for Mike Myers' larger than life character when he attended the London premiere of Shrek The Third on Monday night. A team of weavers came up with a giant piece of clan tartan woven in "Shrek green" for the ogre's big 'green carpet' appearance.

It was of course Toronto-born Mike who gave Shrek his Scottish accent when he first hit screens in 2001, and the actor seemed thrilled with the gesture. The dual British-Canadian citizen, who credits his Liverpool-born mum with his famous sense of humour, describes the Shrek movies as: "a tribute to fairytales that everyone loves. They make you realise that even big ogres have self-esteem issues just like everyone else - and that's a great thing."

Mike, 44, was joined at the UK event by his co-stars Spanish heart-throb Antonio Banderas, Cameron Diaz and singer Justin Timberlake who were in equally high spirits. And it doesn't look like the fun will be coming to an end anytime soon, since the movie's producers just announced that Shrek 4 and Shrek 5 are in the works.
