, which includes Rowan Atkinson as Fagin, received a standing ovation from the opening night's star-studded audience on Wednesday.

Among those moved to show their appreciation by getting to their feet were Tamzin Outhwaite, Barbara Windsor and Denise Van Outen.

And they weren't the only ones to be taken by the production. The show has already drawn £15 million in advance tickets sales, making it the fastest-selling show in British theatre history.

The opening night was also significant for Andrew Lloyd Webber. The theatre supremo, who escorted his wife and daughter Imogen to Drury Lane's Theatre Royal, finally got to see two of the winners of his BBC talent show I'd Do Anything in action.

Jodie Prenger made her first appearance as ill-fated Nancy while 13-year-old Harry Stott – one of three youngsters chosen for the title role – debuted as Oliver.
