Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have revealed they are getting a divorce after five years of marriage.
"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Katie's lawyer. "Her primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
Tom's rep told People magazine: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."
The Top Gun actor, 49, married Dawson Creek star Katie, 33, in a magnificent Italian castle ceremony in November 2006. They have a six-year-old daughter, Suri.
Tom was previously married to Moulin Rouge star Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and actress Mimi Rogers. It's Katie's first marriage.
The Hollywood couple enjoyed a whirlwind romance. Katie very quickly had a taste of life as the plus one of Tom, a superstar so bursting with energy, he put some of his screen characters in the shade.
The Batman Begins actress would later describe being smitten from the first moment she shook his hand: "It just felt like I'd known him forever.
"I was blown away. He's the most incredible man. He's so generous and kind, and he helps so many people, and he makes me laugh like I've never laughed, and he's a great friend..."
Katie was literally swept off her feet, at glitzy premieres accross the globe, and a year after meeting the movie star she gave birth to their daughter Suri.
Throughout their relationship Tom and Katie faced doubters, who questioned the veracity of their feelings. And despite the pair's union lasting five years it appears the pressure of life in the spotlight has taken its toll.
