One Direction superfans, known as 'Directioners', are to speak out in a new documentary that looks at their dedication to the five-piece boyband.

Crazy About One Direction will air on Channel 4 on Thursday 15 August and follows several Directioners as they attempt to get close to the group and use the internet to prove their loyalty to the band. "One Direction's fame is down to Twitter, 100 percent," says one fan. "We can find out literally anything," she adds, referring to how the social media site provides fans with information and direct access to Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne.

During the show one group of girls are seen at a hotel they have discovered the boys are staying in and one fan claims that she slept outside Zayn's hotel room during the night.

"It's like an addiction," adds another Directioner before proudly stating that she has met the band 64 times.

"The documentary will offer a fascinating insight into a new breed of idol worship," said Tayte Simpson, the show's executive producer. "Social media has created huge communities which connect millions of fans in a way that was never possible before.

"One Direction's use of social media to diarise their inner thoughts gives fans a sense of intimacy and ownership, fuelling strong emotions."

The show also touches on some of the more sinister aspects of fandom brought about by online communities who demand and test fan's loyalty.

Directioners came under fire at the beginning of the month when GQ released their September issue featuring interviews with Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis.

Fans claimed the magazine made unfair claims about the boys' lifestyles and used Twitter to voice their criticisms to the world.
