Chris Martin's idea to announce end of Gwyneth Paltrow marriage

Much comment was passed on the "Conscious Uncoupling" statement that was posted to Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop website to announce the actress' shock split with Chris Martin.

But according to new claims in the US – going public with the separation was actually the idea of Coldplay singer Chris.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin recently announced their split
The New York Post's Page Six reports that Gwyneth wanted to keep the couple's break-up under wraps. She went public, however, at the insistence of her husband – who wasn't happy to give the wrong idea that they were still together.

A source told the paper's columnist Richard Johnson: "It was his idea to announce the split. They had drifted apart, and there was no chance they'd get back together, so he felt it was wrong to keep pretending."

Recent stories have also suggested the couple had an "open relationship". An insider said: "They were physically separated and emotionally," while another added: "They have been on and off for many years."

Speaking to People magazine, a close friend of the actress confirmed that the "marriage was falling apart", as a third friend told the magazine that Chris, the lead singer of rock band Coldplay, "is the kind of person who is always in a T-shirt. She's much more glam."

Gwyneth's wedding ring can be seen in this photo she posted to wish son Moses a happy birthday
The pair – who said "we will always be a family", – took their children Apple and Moses away on holiday before breaking the news that they're no longer together.

Their children remain their number one priority – and indeed, Gwyneth was firmy focused on her son Moses this week as wished him a happy eighth birthday on Twitter.

The actress shared a photograph showing her hugging the birthday boy, which she captioned, "Moses Bruce Paltrow Martin turns 8 today. We love you!"

The rare picture of Gwyneth's son, who like his sister Apple has been well shielded from the public eye , showed Gywneth's wedding ring still firmly in place.
