Aaron Taylor-Johnson reveals why wife Sam didn't cast him in Fifty Shades of Grey

Aaron Taylor-Johnson could have been a front-runner to play Christian Grey in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey film — after all, his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the highly-anticipated adaptation.

So why didn't he try out for the role?

"I think it would have been the wrong kind of hype to bring towards us," the 23-year-old actor told Nylon Guys May 2014 issue.

"It would have been kind of funny that this character that all these women fancy — he's one in a million — and my wife picks her husband to play the part? I would love to have done something together again, but it would not have been Fifty. We were both on the same page."

Aaron, who has been married to Sam, 47, since June 2012, revealed that he hasn't even read the books his wife's film is based on, but said he "will watch the movie, though!"

The couple, who met on the set of the 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, are now parents to three-year-old Wylda and two-year-old Romy, and Aaron is also a step-father to Angelica, 16, and eight-year-old Jessie from Sam's previous marriage.

He has come a long way since his early days in Hollywood.

The actor also spoke about his "self-destructive" behaviour when he first moved from London to LA.

"I was pretty self-destructive at one point," Aaron admitted, saying he would smoke 30 cigarettes a day, drink non-stop. "I've always been able to be on the f*****g edge — be on the line, but then pull myself back."

He added, "I was at that age when that was kind of… I stopped when I met Sam."
