Since One Direction went on hiatus at the beginning of the year, Harry Styles is on the verge of breaking Hollywood, Liam Payne has helped Cheryl Fernandez-Versini mend her broken heart and Louis Tomlinson has had a baby.

But, while the others are still very much working on their careers in entertainment, Niall Horan has gone down a slightly different path – golf. The cheeky Irishman has landed his first solo magazine cover with Today's Golfer, and he opened up about how the sport helped him escape from the madness of 1D.

Niall Horan said golf helped him escape the madness of One Direction

Niall, 22, explained: "When I was on the road with One Direction it allowed me to escape the hotel for a few hours and relax. Harry and I used to play a fair bit and travelling so much has allowed me to play some amazing courses all over the world. It's a great way to escape from everything for a few hours."

He's rumoured to have started on solo music since the band's hiatus in January

The What Makes You Beautiful hit maker confessed the distraction has turned into an obsession, and added: "I watch an awful lot of golf on the TV. I love all the stats and when they break down the swings. I can tell you who's top in greens in regulation, driving distance and stuff like that."

Fans of Niall's voice shouldn't worry though: it's been reported he's working on solo tracks – and is said to have even recorded a duet with Rihanna! A source told the Express: "He has the song writing and music talent, good looks and cheeky Irish personality which made him a favourite in the states. A deal with Syco is going to be signed in the coming weeks and Niall is already back in the studio writing."
