Brie Larson has shut down questions about why she didn't clap for Casey Affleck when he won Best Actor at the Academy Awards, saying that her refusal to applaud the star "spoke for itself."

The actress, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for her role in Room, kept her arms by her side after presenting the actor with the award for his performance in Manchester By the Sea.

Brie didn't clap for Casey

Chatting to Vanity Fair, she said: "I think that whatever it was that I did on stage kind of spoke for itself. I've said all that I need to say about that topic." Viewers have speculated that the reason Brie refused to clap was due to the sexual harassment allegations made against Casey by two women in 2010, which were settled out of court.

Speaking about the allegations himself, Casey told The Boston Globe: "I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else. There's really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time."

Brie, who is currently starring in Kong: Skull Island, has recently opened up about the need to see stronger women in films. Chatting to the BBC, she said: "I love that we're seeing stronger women on the screen - but I don't think that's the end of this conversation. Because I think that we're more than just being strong or just being mothering.

"I think there's a whole lot that goes on in between for us to explore. I think the best place to start would be more female film directors - more female film makers of every different type of race - and we need to get out of these binary ways of thinking."
