Mel Brooks is "just getting started", according to comedian Josh Gad who posted a heartwarming tribute to the actor on his 100th birthday on Sunday.
Josh, 45, took to Instagram and shared photos with Mel in honour of his milestone birthday. Josh co-wrote the upcoming sequel to Mel's 1987 Star Wars parody film Spaceballs which will be released on 23 April 2027.
The Frozen actor shared several photos taken during production of the Spaceballs sequel with Mel beaming in all of them.
Alongside the snaps, Josh wrote: "For the past five years, I have had the greatest gift in my life… collaborating with and working alongside my comedy idol, @the.official.mel.brooks.
"Today we celebrate 100 years of his life and legacy. He has made us laugh and hurt on the big screen, the small screen, the stage and even on our record players.
"There is nothing he hasn’t won, nothing he hasn’t achieved, nothing he hasn’t proven and yet at 100, he continues to surprise and thrill us. Whether it’s the latest revival of 'The Producers' on the West End, a “Young Frankenstein” TV series or our upcoming sequel to 'Spaceballs.'
"At 100, he is just getting started and something tells me the best is still yet to come. I love you Mel. I cannot wait for the world to see this next chapter. Thank you for your trust and your co-partnership. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done!!!!"
Comedy legend
Mel has been entertaining the world for over seven decades, beginning his career as a comic and a writer for Sid Caesar's variety show Your Show of Shows, which ran from 1950 to 1954.
"I think laughing keeps you healthy and happy," the legendary comedian told People earlier this year, remarking how he and fellow comedians and friends Carl Reiner and Caesar both lived into their 90s before their deaths in 2020 and 2014, respectively. "We all laughed a lot."
He found wider fame with the "2000 Year Old Man" routine, in which his best friend Carl Reiner interviewed him as a 2,000-year-old man.
He met The Graduate actress Anne Bancroft at a rehearsal for the Perry Como Variety Show in 1961, and they married three years later, welcoming their son Max in 1972. The couple were married for 41 years, together until her death from uterine cancer in 2005, when she was 73 years old.
Mel is a grandfather to at least two grandchildren, his and Bancroft's son Max's son Henry Michael, as well as his and Florence's son Edward's daughter Samantha.
