Gillian Anderson has been in the public eye for more than three decades, but fans could barely believe her age after the actress shared a series of photographs to mark her 58th birthday.
The X-Files star celebrated the milestone with a candid Instagram post, writing: "Thank you everyone for all my birthday messages!!"
In one striking photograph, Gillian posed completely makeup-free with her blonde hair pulled away from her face, showing off her glowing complexion and natural freckles as she smiled into the camera.
© InstagramAnother offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the actress getting ready, with two large rollers pinned into her hair and false eyelashes adding a touch of glamour.
The final image showed the finished transformation, with Gillian sporting voluminous blonde curls, smoky eye makeup and a red lip while holding a candle-topped birthday treat.

The actress, who became a household name playing FBI agent Dana Scully opposite David Duchovny in The X-Files, has been increasingly candid about ageing and the pressures women face as they grow older.
© InstagramEarlier this year, Gillian took part in L'Oréal Paris' Lessons of Worth campaign, which challenged the idea that women become less visible with age.
"When you're young, you're noticed, you're needed, you're whistled at, you're even hit on. And then a few years later, poof, you don't exist. You're in the way," she said in the campaign.
However, Gillian's own experience of getting older has been far more positive. Speaking to InStyle, she admitted she doesn't believe it is necessarily possible to change the way all men perceive women and ageing, but said her relationship with herself has only strengthened with time.

Gillian Anderson's career renaissance
More than 30 years after The X-Files first made her a star, Gillian's career has continued to evolve.
She won a new generation of fans playing sex therapist Dr Jean Milburn in Netflix's Sex Education, while her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Crown earned her both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Away from acting, Gillian has also turned her attention to conversations surrounding women's sexuality. In 2024, she released Want, an anthology of anonymous sexual fantasies submitted by women from around the world, which she edited.
The project proved so successful that the actress has since announced a follow-up. And as she embraces another year, Gillian appears equally interested in the freedom that can come with growing older. Asked what she would tell her younger self in her twenties and thirties, she had a simple piece of advice: "To care less about what other people think and do more for other people."
