David Niven is one of Britain's most iconic actors, with the star playing everyone from James Bond in spy parody Casino Royale to Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights.

The star, who became an actor after growing disillusioned as a soldier, earned two Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award during his career, earning the latter for his role in 1958's Separate Tables. Despite only appearing in the movie for 23 minutes, he still won Best Actor for his portrayal of Major David Angus Pollock.

During his time on-screen, David acted alongside several leading ladies of the time, including Rita Hayworth, Maggie Smith, Shirley MacLaine and Ginger Rogers. However, his heart belonged to Primula "Primmie" Susan Rollo.

The pair met in 1940, while David was on leave from his military service, and following a whirlwind relationship, they married the same year, eventually welcoming two sons. However, Primmie tragically died at the age of 28 following a skull fracture sustained in a fall.

The actor would later meet Swedish glamour model Hjördis Paulina Tersmeden, and despite a reportedly tumultuous relationship, the pair remained together until David's death at the age of 73 on 29 July 1983. The couple adopted two daughters during their marriage.

But who are David's four children? Meet the foursome below, including the actor's eldest son, who also became an actor.

David's eldest son, David Jr., was born in 1942, and like his father, he has since entered the world of showbusiness. Although David Jr. had roles in the likes of The Cool Surface and Rush Hour 3, he is more famous for his work behind the camera.

The 83-year-old has worked on the likes of The Eagle Has Landed, Escape to Athena, Better Late Than Never, The Cool Surface and The Girl with Hungry Eyes. Escape to Athena saw the producer working alongside his father as Professor Blake, and the film also starred Roger Moore and Telly Savalas.

In 1993, he married actress Barbara Bucholz, but the couple divorced five years later. He later found love with Beatrice Anne Reed, but following their 2000 wedding, they also split five years later.

David's second son, Jamie, hasn't stayed out of the public eye, even though he didn't pursue the same career as his father and older brother. Jamie is actually an arts executive and addiction recovery addict, with the latter stemming from his own issues with addiction.

The star's issues stemmed from the death of his mother, with the businessman being just six months old when she died in the freak accident. Speaking on the Heart of the Matter podcast, he explained: "I remember John Cheever wrote once that the inescapable fact is that his mother died when he was young, and that lingered with him his entire life.

"I think that when I see my daughter with her son, for example, and the hugging and the holding and all that good stuff. Yeah, you don't get that. And therefore, you do come out, at the end of the day, you have to say yourself, you're pretty lonely."

Jamie spoke of how his mother's death impact his life

David's two adopted daughters, Kristina and Fiona, have stayed out of the public spotlight, but they had a large impact on their adoptive parents' relationship. Hjördis once recalled: "There was a time during our marriage when I was dissatisfied. But now that Kristina has come into our lives, she has given our marriage a new lustre and it can never happen again.

"Now I had my baby girl, I could watch David and his boys swimming, sailing or just kicking a ball about the lawn and feel closer to them than ever before."
