Iconic '80s movie co-stars who are still best friends decades later

After playing the slacker duo Bill and Ted together in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter went on to share a lifelong friendship. The sci-fi comedy film blossomed into decades of closeness, with the pair starring in two sequels: 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and 2020's Bill & Ted Face the Music. 

Taking things from the screen to the stage, they co-starred in Waiting for Godot on Broadway together from 2025 to 2026. Speaking about how the play reflects their younger selves, 60-year-old Alex told The Small Bow podcast in April 2026 on Keanu, 61: "There are times when I'm looking at him on stage and he's Estragon and he's Keanu and I'm thinking about stuff that happened between us almost 40...35 years ago. The dialogue I'm saying, the emotions that I have to conjure up, they are literally about this guy, and it was very trippy and uncommon." What a pair!

Despite a 20-year age gap between the stars on the set of Back to the Future (1985), nothing could stop their brotherly bond. Michael J. Fox (playing Marty McFly) was 23 at the time, while Christopher Lloyd (playing scientist Dr Emmett Brown) was 46. 

Over the decades, they have kept fans delighted with their mutual support. Michael, 65, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991, and Christopher, now 87, regularly shows support for his former co-star. The duo frequently break the internet when they reunite, such as at the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future in 2025, and are often spotted together at fundraising galas for Parkinson's charities. When Michael returned to acting with a highly anticipated guest appearance on The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight in 2020, Christopher sweetly wrote in the comments for the 65-year-old: "Love you Michael." Not a dry eye in the house!

From fierce box-office rivals to best friends, both of these '80s action heavyweights had a fierce media rivalry back in the day, largely because they competed for the exact same Hollywood roles. Eventually, after years of being pitted against one another, the pair put their differences aside and went on to star in The Expendables franchise together. In the 2023 Netflix documentary series Arnold, Sylvester reflected on their past competition, admitting: "He wanted to be number one. Unfortunately, he got there." Considering Arnold was The Terminator and Sylvester was Rocky, both legends made their mark. The fact that they overcame their fierce rivalry to become close confidantes makes their friendship all the more impressive.

Playing best friends in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck were actually close friends long before John Hughes' classic coming-of-age film. Before being cast as high school ringleader Ferris Bueller (Matthew) and his neurotic best pal Cameron Frye (Alan), Alan revealed to The Guardian in July 2026 that he almost missed out on the role: "They didn’t offer it to me right away. Matthew’s manager kept laying the idea in John’s ear, saying: 'Matthew would like to work with Alan.' That went a long way to getting me the part. Matthew and I were already friends. We didn’t have to make that up." 

Luckily, having a supportive friend already attached to the project paid off!  Fans may soon see Matthew, 64 and Alan, 70, share the screen once more, with Deadline announcing in 2023 that they are set to star in an upcoming film, The Best Is Yet to Come.

Casting a 6ft 2in bodybuilder alongside a 4ft 10in comedy star as twin brothers in the '80s hit Twins (1988) was an inspired move. The comedy classic forged an instant bond between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, who played brothers Julius and Vincent Benedict. The 81-year-old comedy legend hinted to CNN that his connection to Arnold, 79, goes back even further, noting: "Arnold and I are good buddies. We met way before Twins, years ago." From presenting together at the Academy Awards in 2024 to regularly sharing hilarious throwbacks on Instagram, this is a true lifelong friendship.

Lifelong friends Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal made rom-com history in When Harry Met Sally... (1989). Exploring whether men and women can ever "just be friends", the co-stars proved in real life that a deep, platonic bond is entirely possible. When Billy was honoured in 2023 at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors, Meg, 64, delivered a touching onstage tribute set against a recreation of Katz's Delicatessen. After jokingly remarking, "the scene came really naturally to me, and I really have Billy to thank for that," she paid tribute to his wife, Janice Crystal (née Goldfinger), to whom Billy, 78, has been married for over 50 years: "As his wife Janice has known for over 50 years, falling in love with Billy is a pretty easy thing to do." Can we please have a When Harry Met Sally... sequel already?
