Catwoman star Halle Berry is an advocate of self-acceptance. While acknowledging the "pressure" she experiences as an actress to undergo some kind of cosmetic procedure, she feels if she were to relent, it would change who she is on a fundamental level.

"Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us," the 60-year-old told Yahoo! Beauty back in 2015. "I just want to always look like myself, even if that's an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way."

Maybe that's easy for Halle Berry to say, as she's clearly been blessed in the genetic lottery!

At 60 years old, Grown Ups actress Salma Hayek takes an alternative approach to freezing time, and steers well clear of any Botox needles.

She told Kelly Ripa on Let's Talk Off Camera: "I do a lot of the frequency machines and they work on me better than on anyone.

"And just the meditation itself … sometimes when I’m doing it, people tell me when I come out of the room, ‘Oh my God, you look 20 years old.'" With such a ringing endorsement, I'm tempted to try it myself!

One of the most famous plastic surgery refuseniks is singer Barbra Streisand, whose distinctive features are something of a calling card.

In her memoir, My Name is Barbra, she revealed she refused a nose job and cap in her teeth, despite pressure throughout her career to undergo the procedures: "I thought, Isn't my talent enough? A nose job would hurt and be expensive. Besides, how could I trust anyone to do exactly what I wanted and no more?

"It was too much of a risk. And who knew what it might do to my voice? Once a doctor told me I had a deviated septum … maybe that's why I sound the way I do. Besides, I liked long noses … the Italian actress Silvana Mangano had one, and everyone seemed to think she was beautiful."

I for one think her nose looks lovely! I'm sure she wouldn't have been half so iconic without her perfect imperfections.

With a childhood spent under the harsh glare of the spotlight, actress Drew Barrymore could be easily excused for succumbing to the pressure and scrutiny placed on her body from a young age after shooting to prominence as a child star in E.T.

Despite this, she told viewers on her eponymous talk show that she's never gone under the knife though emphasized it was completely a personal position: "I haven't done anything and I want to try and stay that way… I have zero judgment for anyone doing anything. But I don’t see myself resorting to it."

Love Actually star Emma has long been a supporter of self-love, so much so that she went fully nude in her film, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, helping to normalize the aging female body. The actress told Vanity Fair: "I accept my body. I don’t have to love it, but I accept it."

In a similar vein, it is not surprising that Emma actively rebels against societal conditioning that might convince people they need plastic surgery in the first place, to such an extent that she dubbed Botox and similar treatments "mad", telling HELLO!: "It's not a normal thing to do, and the culture that we've created that says it's normal, is not normal.

"Why do people ask people to cut them open and put things into their body? What is that, what are we doing to ourselves?

"It's chronically unhealthy and there's this very serious side to all of that because we're going to end up with this sort of 'super-culture' that's going to suggest to young people, girls and boys, that this looks normal. And it's not normal."

Now 77, Meryl Streep shows that not all women need to go under the knife to enjoy a long-lasting career in Hollywood. Given her success, she admits she just "doesn't get" plastic surgery.

She told Good Housekeeping back in 2008: "You have to embrace getting older. Life is precious, and when you've lost a lot of people, you realize each day is a gift."

The Devil Wears Prada actress was described by Vanity Fair in 2009, aged 60, as the (un-Botoxed) face of a Hollywood revolution. As an actress, she explained why needles are a no-go for her.

"When I see it in people I meet, it's like an interruption in communication with them. It's like a flag in front of the view, and that, for an actor, is like wearing a veil – it's not a good thing."

However, Meryl's fame and acting talent is such that it's hard to imagine her being denied a job based on her appearance.

Actress Julianne, 65, first spoke out against Botox in 2010, saying face alteration looked "weird", but has since opted to criticize ageism, rather than the methods to slow the aging process.

The Still Alice star told W magazine of the phrase 'aging gracefully': "There's so much judgment inherent in the term ... Is there an ungraceful way to age? We don't have an option, of course. No one has an option about aging, so it's not a positive or a negative thing; it just is." It's hard to argue with that!

Julianne added that aging was not something people "have control over", suggesting it hasn't even crossed her mind to check in to see a plastic surgeon. Clearly this level of self-confidence is something to be aspired to in itself. I would argue that as aging can look vastly different for everybody, it's something that people may wish to control where possible.

Silence of the Lambs star Jodie is one of Hollywood's fiercest advocates for aging naturally.

The 63-year-old told The Atlantic that she would rather have people say "Man, she looks like 20 miles of bad road" than "She hated her face, so she got plastic surgery".

While maybe a narrow view of the many reasons people feel compelled to go under the knife, Jodie's unwavering embrace of her body's natural aging no doubt provides an example to others around a similar age.

Suggesting tweakments to Kate Winslet is a little bit like suggesting there was room for Jack on the door to the production team of the Titanic – generally met with an eye roll and then ignored.

Back in 2011, when she was around 35 – showing just how early these conversations can come up for actresses – she told The Telegraph exactly what she thought about plastic surgery, and didn't mince her words.

"It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty. I'll never give in. I am an actress, I don't want to freeze the expression of my face."

It's a view that hasn't changed even as she approaches 50. "I take pride in it because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up," she told Harper's Bazaar, adding that she feels "more comfortable" with herself every passing year.

Whether morality has anything to do with it is a different question. Surely if higher levels of confidence are achieved through surgical alteration, then that can only be a positive thing.

Renowned as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Angelina Jolie has a face that many plastic surgeons only dream of emulating. Perhaps then it is of little surprise that she hasn't felt the need to change her appearance, bar the preventative double mastectomy she had in 2013 after discovering that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer.

"I haven't had anything done and I don't think I will," the mother of six told the Daily Mail in 2010, when she was 35. "But if it makes somebody happy then that's up to them. I'm not in somebody else's skin to know what makes them feel better about themselves. But I don't plan to do it myself."

Now aged 51, the Lara Croft actress has a few fine lines that suggest she has stuck to her guns and avoided any tweakments – if I had Angelina Jolie's face, I certainly wouldn't change a thing!

Jamie went under the knife aged just 25 after her eyes were described as baggy, but I am including her on this list as she has been a vocal critic of appearance alteration ever since.

While her character in Freaky Friday may have swapped bodies with her teenage daughter, Jamie is in no hurry to head back to younger years, and makes a point of keeping her hair gray and avoiding the surgical knife at all costs.

She told The Guardian that she felt a generation of women had been "wiped out" by the "cosmeceutical industrial complex", adding that they'd "disfigured themselves".

"The concept that you can alter the way you look through chemicals, surgical procedures, fillers – there’s a disfigurement of generations of predominantly women who are altering their appearances. And it is aided and abetted by AI, because now the filter face is what people want. I'm not filtered right now. The minute I lay a filter on and you see the before and after, it’s hard not to go: 'Oh, well that looks better.' But what's better? Better is fake."

While I admire Jamie's conviction here, I have to wonder if 'disfigurement' is harsh, especially given many women who choose to undergo plastic surgery only do so in order to fulfill societal expectations placed on them, victims themselves of a culture that convinces them their natural state isn't good enough.

Despite being a former child actor and entering the daunting limelight at 16 years old the Family Ties actress has remained steadfast in her anti-plastic surgery stance. The 60-year-old prefers to address the root emotions surrounding getting older rather than altering her appearance. "I find it really wrong that women right now are absorbing this idea that their faces need to be fixed," she stated to People in 2021.

She explained: "I realised my face is only going to get older. So why not take care of whatever fear I have attached to that."

The Violet director believes undergoing plastic surgery stems from a desire to appease critics. "I think getting all this plastic surgery is just people-pleasing. You don't want people to criticize you anymore, so you appease them. The more you do that, the further away you get from your true self. It doesn't work for me."
