It has been 31 years since Keeping Up Appearances aired its final episode, yet it remains an enduring icon of British television.

For five series, viewers watched as Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet", of course) attempted to climb the social ladder, frequently thwarted by her boisterous working-class relatives and long-suffering husband, Richard.

From the vest-wearing loafer Onslow to the stoic Richard, here is what became of the cast of Keeping Up Appearances.

Patricia Routledge starred as Hyacinth Bucket, the famously priggish social climber who insisted her surname was pronounced "Bouquet" and lost her temper whenever anyone dared to say it wrong.

When she was not busy attempting to conceal her less-refined relatives, Hyacinth spent her time hosting her beloved candlelight suppers and orchestrating high-society soirees.

After wrapping up the classic sitcom in 1995, Patricia largely stepped away from the television spotlight, living a quiet life in Chichester for many years. In 2025, to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, she appeared on BBC One to share vivid memories of the Second World War as a child growing up in Liverpool.

Sadly, Dame Patricia passed away peacefully in her sleep in October 2025 at the age of 96 at her home in Chichester.

Richard Bucket, played by the indelible Clive Swift, expertly tempered the manic social climbing of his wife, Hyacinth.

A retired council official, Richard spent most of his days chauffeuring his eccentric spouse to and from high-society events while delivering some of the show's sharpest lines with masterful, deadpan wit.

A classically trained thespian, Clive went on to appear in Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders, and The Old Guys. The actor sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 82.

Geoffrey Hughes (Onslow)

If Hyacinth represented aspirational elegance, Onslow was the absolute antithesis. Portrayed by Geoffrey Hughes, Onslow was almost permanently dressed in a singlet vest and a baseball cap, serving as the ultimate working-class foil to the Buckets' snobbery.

After the sitcom concluded in 1995, Geoffrey landed the equally iconic role of Twiggy in The Royle Family, before going on to play Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat.

Following an initial diagnosis of prostate cancer in the 1990s, Geoffrey stepped back from acting after a relapse, sadly passing away in 2012 at the age of 68.

Judy Cornwell (Daisy)

Judy Cornwell played Hyacinth's sister Daisy, who spent most of her time reading romance paperbacks on the sofa and attempting to entice Onslow away from the television set.

In an interview with The Mirror, Judy revealed that she still receives letters from fans across the globe. She said: "I get a lot of letters saying that while they knew Pat was the posh lead, they all identified with Daisy and Onslow because this is how they thought life to be. And I thought that was lovely and charming."

Now 86, Judy went on to star in EastEnders as Heather Trott's mother, Queenie, alongside appearances in Birds of a Feather, Midsomer Murders, and Doctor Who. Away from the screen, she penned several successful novels and starred as Miss Marple in a nationwide stage production of A Murder Is Announced.

Shirley Stelfox (Rose – Series One)

Shirley Stelfox originated the role of Hyacinth's flirtatious younger sister, Rose. Whether parading around in a miniskirt or pursuing married men, Rose's romantic escapades were a source of constant mortification for Hyacinth.

After departing the show following the first series, Shirley became an icon of British soap opera, appearing in EastEnders, Family Affairs, and Brookside, before cementing her legacy as the sharp-tongued Edna Birch in Emmerdale.

Sadly, Shirley passed away from cancer in 2015 at the age of 74, just four weeks after receiving her diagnosis.

Mary Millar took over the role of the man-eating Rose from series two onwards. After the series concluded in 1995, Mary returned to the West End stage, where she had previously built an illustrious musical theatre career.

Her notable later credits included originating the role of Mrs Potts in the London production of Beauty and the Beast. Sadly, Mary passed away from ovarian cancer in 1998 at the age of 62.
