Fashionistas from John Galliano to Gwyneth Paltrow turned out Monday night to honour former First Lady and style icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the $3,500-a-plate dinner launched the famed museum’s latest exhibit, Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.

“Jackie O was the best of the best,” said comedian-cum-fashion critic Joan Rivers. Bridget Jones herself, Renee Zellweger, called Jackie “classy” while supermodel Elle Macpherson praised her “elegance and style.”

But Jackie’s daughter Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg points out the deeper meaning behind the show. “I know that visitors will enjoy looking at her dresses, riding clothes, hats and jewelry, but these are just the starting point,” she said. “She believed in my father and his vision for America, and in the art of politics. Together, my parents sought a more just society and a better world, and their example still inspires us today.”

The retrospective includes dozens of ensembles the First Lady wore during John F Kennedy’s 1960 campaign as well as a collection of her memos, sketches and speeches. “I think it’s a great tribute to her and shows how multifaceted she was,” Kennedy cousin and TV presenter Maria Shriver said.

Demi Moore, Andie MacDowell, Sigourney Weaver, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, designers Tom Ford and Giorgio Armani, Faith Hill and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton were all on hand for the high-wattage launch. Proceeds from the charity gala go to the MET’s Costume Institute and the retrospective is scheduled to run through the end of July.
