There was a time when maternity dressing on the red carpet meant strategic cuts, conservative silhouettes and muted palettes designed to hide a baby bump rather than highlight it. Today, more women than ever are embracing, accentuating or baring them entirely (kudos to Kate Hudson, who was one of the first to do it in a Chanel two-piece back in the 00s). Pregnancy dressing has transformed from tricky to a major fashion statement.
From the arcades of Cannes to the steps of the Met Gala, there's no rulebook. Dressing a bump has evolved into everything from deconstructed menswear to sheer fabrics and sculptural couture. Here, I take a look at 16 times celebrities aged 35 and over redefined pregnancy on the world’s most-watched red carpets, from the most recent to the women who wore it first.

Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway, 43, turned heads at the premiere of her new movie The End of Oak Street in California on Sunday as she bared her baby bump in a statement floor-sweeping top by Prabel Gurung and low-rise relaxed fit jeans. The actress was glowing, and completed the look with her hair slicked back and a chic matte red lip.

Trust Sienna Miller to turn a bump reveal into couture. At 41, the British style icon traded more traditional pregnancy dressing for this incredible, cloud-like Schiaparelli creation at Vogue World in 2023. She was pregnant with her second child - her first with fiancé Oli Green.

The actress nailed it once again on the Fashion Awards red carpet in 2025. She announced her third pregnancy to the world in this incredible white sheer gown by Givenchy, which featured a sculpted sweetheart neckline.

There were two pregnancy reveals that night as 38-year-old Ellie Goulding brought a rebellious edge to maternity style, baring her bump in a crop top, tailored shorts, and slingback stilettos. The singer layered the look with a leather coat and a jewelled cross necklace.

Rihanna
Another star who has never shied away from statement pregnancy style is Rihanna. At 35-years-old and pregnant with her second child, she arrived at the 2023 Oscars wearing a custom Alaïa ensemble featuring sheer and leather panels, a slash-cut skirt and a long train. Truly unapologetic.

Miranda Kerr
Miranda Kerr looked stunning at the Gruner+Jahr Spa Awards in Baden-Baden in 2019, wearing a powder pink Alex Perry gown complete with pleated cape sleeves and subtle shimmer to debut her baby bump. The supermodel and Kora Organics founder was 35-years-old and expecting her second child.

Attending the 42nd César Awards in Paris in 2017 while expecting twins, 39-year-old human rights lawyer Amal Clooney stunned in a bespoke strapless dress by Atelier Versace. The figure-skimming silhouette cascaded into an ombre-feathered hemline and her styling was classic Old Hollywood glamour.

Anne Hathaway
Anne has always had incredible pregnancy style. Pictured here at the 2019 Broadway opening night of Sea Wall/A Life in New York, she wore a bespoke blue Givenchy gown with dramatic pleating and a sculptural floral bodice. She was 36 at the time and pregnant with her second child.

Blake Lively
Blake Lively made a dazzling surprise pregnancy announcement at the Forbes Power Women's Summit in 2022. Aged 35, she was expecting her fourth child with husband Ryan Reynolds and embraced high octane 70s glamour in a metallic sequinned Valentino mini dress. She styled it with a white neck scarf, statement hoop earrings, and sky-high platform heels.

She didn't actually walk the red carpet, but Meghan made a surprise appearance at the 2018 British Fashion Awards in London to present an award to her wedding dress designer, Clare Waight Keller. The 37-year-old Duchess was expecting her first child with Prince Harry at the time and looked beautiful in the asymmetric velvet column gown.

Natalie Portman
Channelling 1960s glamour, a 35-year-old Natalie Portman wore a yellow Prada gown on the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet paired with vintage Tiffany & Co. jewellery. It featured a shift silhouette and was finished with an elegant, delicate crystal-embellished hem.

40-year-old Adriana Lima shut down the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in a jaw-dropping custom gown by Olivier Rousteing. Featuring structured power shoulders, dramatic floor-sweeping sleeves, and a sharp circular cut-out that framed her bump, the supermodel brought gothic-glam pregnancy style to the French Riviera.

Taking home two awards at the 2017 Grammy Awards for Lemonade and Formation, a 35-year-old Beyoncé dazzled in this custom red sequinned dress while pregnant with twins Rumi and Sir. The Peter Dundas creation featured a plunging neckline, accented by a stunning diamond necklace and sleek, waist-grazing hair.

Stepping into the 2025 Met Gala at 37, Rihanna was pregnant with her third child and paired structured pinstripes with a boned corset waist, a cropped black jacket, and a tilted wide-brim hat. The ensemble leaned heavily into subverted mobster-chic.

Zoe Saldana
In 2014, a 36-year-old Zoe Saldana chose this beautiful pink Dior gown for the red carpet while pregnant with her twin boys. The actress's dress was cut with a cascading handkerchief hem and graceful fabric folds.

Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington delivered an unforgettable moment at the 2016 Emmy Awards. At 39-years-old, the pregnant Scandal star commanded the red carpet in a custom strapless black gown featuring side waist cut-outs, a dramatic cape train, and her hair styled in gorgeous voluminous curls.
