Tom Ford took his final catwalk bow this week, showing his last-ever collection for Yves Saint Laurent at Paris Fashion Week. The ubiquitous designer, whose farewell collection for his other label, Gucci, was centre stage at the recent Milan ready-to-wear shows, went out with a typically sexy collection for YSL Rive Gauche.

"Dazzlingly opulent" is how US Vogue editor Anna Wintour described the Asian-inspired line-up of pencil skirts, Chinese gowns, and fitted peplum jackets made more dramatic with peaked Pagoda shoulders. The silhouette was ultra-slim and simple, colours were deep and the fabrics – liquid satin and rich velvets, with occasional fur flair – were truly luxurious, making the American designer's finale both elegant and spectacular.

And what's next for Ford? It looks like he's headed for Hollywood. "I am very serious about wanting to make a movie – as a director" he told Women's Wear Daily, adding later: "I am actively looking for a project. Whether I'll ever find it, I don't know."

In the meantime, it looks like he's putting his fashion career on the back burner in favour of some well-needed rest and relaxation. "All I know is I need to get to my ranch in New Mexico," he says, "and spend three or four months riding my horses and just being alone."
