New York Fashion Week opened with a crimson tide on Friday as a host of celebrities joined the pros on the catwalk for the Red Collection show - helping raise awareness of heart disease.

Old-hands Helena Christensen and Alek Wek led the scarlet sensations in a series of beautiful one-off-creations by top designers, including Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan and Narcisco Rodriguez.

Among the bevy of beauties doing their bit for a good cause were Liverpool-born Kim Catrall, American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee, in a stunning Daniel Swarovski mini dress embellished with thousands of crystals, and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth in Rebecca Taylor - accompanied by a pooch dressed in matching hue.

One woman used to making a runway appearance is flamboyant designer Betsey Johnson - famed for doing cartwheels at the end of her shows. The 64-year-old trendsetter seemed to be enjoying every minute as a model in a glamorous strapless dress of her own making. She thrilled the audience, which counted among them First Lady Laura Bush, with her outrageous poses - putting fun firmly in fashion.
