American movie star Woody Harrelson received a standing ovation from an audience that included fellow actors Hugh Grant and John Hurt at the West End premiere of the play On An Average Day on Wednesday.

Woody, who hit the headlines in June when he spent the night in a police cell after going “berserk” in the back of a London cab, made a triumphant debut on the West End stage opposite Sex And The City star Kyle MacLachlan.

After the show Hugh Grant said: “I’m not normally a theatre person but I’ve come along because Kyle and I are golf friends. Although the gunshots in the performance shocked me – I have a hearing problem and can’t stand loud noises – I thought it was a great performance from Kyle and Woody.”

Also present was the Cheers actor’s ex, Glenn Close, who will make her own British stage debut next month in A Streetcar Named Desire. Woody and Glenn had a brief fling 11 years ago and have remained firm friends ever since. On Wednesday Glenn changed seats to sit by his wife of four years, Laura Louie, and their two daughters.

In On An Average Day, Woody and Kyle play estranged brothers. Kyle’s character returns home after 15 years to find his troubled younger brother has retreated into a bizarre private world.

Kyle, who still sported a black eye from a rehearsal of their fight scene, said: “It was a wonderful experience doing this play. I don’t think anyone expected this response from the audience tonight. It’s very satisfying.”

Woody himself admitted, “I was very nervous tonight but I controlled my adrenalin and it seemed to go very well,” adding, “And, man, I love Kyle – I thought he was amazing.”

The pair are considering transferring the production to New York if they can act together in the lead roles.
