RELATIONS WARM BETWEEN NICOLE AND HER EX

After Nicole Kidman accepted her best actress Oscar for the Virginia Wolff drama The Hours, one of the first people with whom she chose to share her victory was ex-husband Tom Cruise.

Although the two divorced following a painful and high profile split in 2001, relations between them seem to have warmed of late. Following the ceremony, the flame-haired Aussie spoke to Tom and her son Conor in New Zealand where the Mission Impossible star is currently lensing The Last Samurai.

"It was so important for me to talk to Conor and, yes, to Tom," she said at the time. "We have very different lives now, but as I've said to Tom, I will be there for him for the rest of his life, always there. There's a beautiful moment in The Hours when Woolf says, 'Always the years together, always the hours,' and Tom and I had 11 years together. Your heart has to stay loving. For the kids, it has to be."

Those hoping for a reconciliation between the pair may want to keep their eyes peeled during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival – May 14 to 25 – which both Nicole and Tom, plus his new squeeze Penelope Cruz, are expected to attend. Pen will be there to promote her film Fanfan La Tulipe, while Nic's in town with her new flick Dogville. If the trio do end up bumping into each other, it will be the first such encounter since the Cruises split in 2001.

While the press constantly link Nic to her on-screen loves – it was suggested she and her Cold Mountain co-star Jude Law had become embroiled in a liaison during filming in Romania last year and similar stories emerged about her and Moulin Rouge's Ewan McGregor - the actress insists she is still single. "I want someone who says: 'I will stand by you and be there for you and your life is just as important to me as mine.' I'm not someone who just says: 'Oh yeah, this is silly and light and fun.' I like to be in love. Nothing casual. I'm not interested in casual. I'm waiting for someone to come rock my world."

She emphasises she is not actively seeking romance, however: "I'm not looking. I don't ask men out, and I can't be set up with anyone because I can't bear the idea of letting anyone down."

Relations between the couple, who will both be in Cannes next month for the film festival, seem to have warmed in recent months. Married for ten years, they split up in 2001, with Tom soon becoming involved with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz.
