SHOW-STOPPING JEWELS IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT CANNES

From the minute Penelope Cruz stepped on to the red carpet to launch Cannes wearing a spectacular jade choker by John Galliano, it was clear that stunning jewels were going to take centre stage.

Since the glitzy film festival kicked off, it seems every stylish female A-lister has been dripping in gems. At Thursday's Cinema Against AIDS Cannes 2003 event, supermodel Iman arrived wearing a rare $2-million orange, emerald-cut diamond ring and a striking 56-carat wildflower couture necklace made up of 5,000 diamonds.

The queen of jewellery, Elizabeth Taylor, however, still reigns when it comes to opulence. The legendary star changed her sparkling accessories as often as she changed her outfits, sporting a huge emerald neckpiece with matching earrings at the charity bash just hours after she wore a stunning pearl confection to a special showing of Giant.

Other celebs also sporting eye-catching necklaces at Cannes included Eva Herzigova, Adriana Karembeu and Nicole Kidman. The Oscar-winning actress chose a vintage turquoise necklace to set off her elegant Gucci frock for her Cannes debut before changing gowns – and donning Bulgari jewels with multi-coloured stones – for the world premiere of Dogville.
