Renowned character actress Angela Bassett has become a parent twice over after welcoming twins. The 47-year-old and her husband of eight years Courtney B Vance, who is also an actor, are now looking forward to playing mum and dad to their new son and daughter.

A representative for the couple has revealed the babies were born on Friday to a surrogate mother. "I'm looking forward to it," said Angela in a recent interview. "I thought I would have the option to bear children in my forties as long as I was healthy and took care of myself, but I don't. My body decided what it was going to do. I was unable to carry, but there are other ways you can have children."

The actress is best-known for her Golden Globe-winning portrayal of Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It?, but she has also made high-profile appearances in movies like Strange Days and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Her husband, meanwhile, plays district attorney Ron Carver in the NBC legal drama Law And Order.
