Berlin's annual film festival got off to an appropriately chilly start this week when a sudden snowstorm appeared just as Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman were about to present their new film Snow Cake. The unexpected arrival of a few white flakes could do little to dampen the two performers' enthusiasm as they arrived for the world premiere of their much talked-about movie, however.
Over the next few days George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Vin Diesel and Isabelle Huppert are all expected to visit the German capital, but on Thursday night it was the British actor and his American co-star who were basking in glory.
In the flick Sigourney plays an autistic woman called Linda who loses her son after he is involved in a traffic accident. Her portrayal of the troubled character was one of the toughest of her career, and industry insiders are tipping her for success at next year's awards ceremonies.
"It took me a long time to even understand how to prepare for this part because every person with autism is so unique and to find someone like Linda took a long time," explained the veteran actress. "I have to say it was one of the most fascinating years I've ever spent and I learned so much. I met so many wonderful people."
The movie faces some tough competition for the festival's main prize, The Golden Bear. British director Michael Winterbottom is also considered a strong contender, with his political drama The Road To Guantanamo, while US maestros Robert Altman and Sidney Lumet are likewise contesting the coveted gong.
