Surprise guests, standing ovations and stunning gowns – the 68th annual BAFTA awards had it all. Scores of A-List stars walked the red carpet at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday evening for the UK's biggest film events.

Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore continued their winning streaks in London, taking home trophies for Leading Actor and Leading Actress respectively. Eddie's film The Theory of Everything was also named Outstanding British Film.

Eddie Redmayne celebrates his win with Professor Stephen Hawking

The gong was presented by a dapper David Beckham, who revealed it was his first time at the ceremony. The father-of-four said he was excited to be around such "talented people" and described the award-winning The Theory of Everything as "just stunning".

Another celebrity making a surprise appearance was Tom Cruise, who handed over the award for Best Film to Boyhood.

Meanwhile Professor Stephen Hawking received one of the biggest cheers of the night when he arrived on stage to present the Visual Effects award alongside Felicity Jones. The Professor was given a standing ovation by the audience and went on to provide one of the funniest moments of the night. Felicity said she was honoured to present an award "with the only person more intelligent than Stephen Fry", before the professor quipped: "Yes, and better looking."

Other highlights included Benedict Cumberbatch and his fiancée Sophie Hunter sharing a tender moment on the red carpet. The couple, who are expecting their first child together this spring, gazed lovingly at each other as they entered the Royal Opera House, much to the envy of fans of the Sherlock actor.

One of the best dressed ladies of the evening was actress Laura Haddock, who was attending with her husband, Hunger Games actor Sam Claflin. The 29-year-old stunned in an Ashi Studio dress.
