Maud, who is a known supporter of the feminist movement, has taken her son on an outing, unbeknownst to his father Sonny.

"When are you coming home?" asks George.

"Dunno," says Maud.

"Have you done something very bad mother?" asks George.

"Don't think so. I just can't come home at the moment," says Maud.

"Is it because of your sickness? Dad says you're not well in the head," says George.

"That's not true George," says his mother.

Maud must then bring her son back home to his worried father, who scolds the doting mum for taking away George. "Don't take him away again Maud," says Sonny, played by Ben Whishaw. "Trust you with him?"

Suffragette, which is due for release on 12 October, tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, when women were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal state.

Fighting for the right to vote, these women were not only from the genteel educated classes, there were working women among them who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing.

Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Carey's character Maud was one such foot soldier.
