Fifty Shades Darker trailer smashes records, dethrones Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Fans of the Fifty Shades films were delighted when the trailer for the franchise's second film, Fifty Shades Darker, was released Wednesday. So delighted in fact, the trailer has now smashed records, beating 2015's biggest film of the year Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens by reaching the most views of all time in the first 24 hours.

The trailer for the novel adaptation received an incredible 114 million views in the first 24 hours, beating Star Wars Episode VIII's record of 112 million, and fans excitedly took to Twitter to discuss, with one writing: "Fifty Shades Darker dethrones "The Force Awakens" as most viewed trailer in 24 hours", THIS FANDOM HAS NEVER BEEN SO LIT," while another wrote: "I can already tell that Fifty Shades Darker will be one of those rare Hollywood events where the sequel is better than the original."

The film trailer smashed records

The trailer sees Dakota Johnson reprise her role as Anastasia Steele, a shy University graduate who embarks on a passionate relationship with the mysterious Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).

Following the events of the first film, the trailer show Christian attempt to win Anastasia back, telling her he wants her back and saying: "I had no idea what this was going to become," while Ana says: "I don't see how this can work." The tagline flashes across the trailer, reading: "Forget the past and slip into something a shade darker."

This is the second film in the franchise

The trailer shows an incredible Masquerade Ball attended by the reconciled couple, introduces Kim Basinger as Elena Lincoln, a previous flame of Christian's, and shares a glimpse of Ana and Christian kissing passionately in the shower.

The trailer then takes a darker note, showing glimpses of Ana waking up to find a girl watching her sleep, being harassed by her boss at work, and hints at a helicopter crash before revealing the cinema release date, 10 February 2017.
