Mark and Spencer's new Christmas advert stars Mrs Claus, who helps a little boy called Jake make his sister happy while keeping her helping hand a secret from her husband, Santa.

The video was shared on the M&S Twitter account, with the caption reading: "Here's to a wonderful Christmas filled with love. #LoveMrsClaus."

The video follows Mrs Claus hiding a letter from Santa as he leaves to go and deliver presents to children. Reading the letter, we learn about Jake and his big sister Anna, and although Jake annoys her, he feels guilty that his dog accidentally ruined her favourite shoes.

He said: "Dear Mrs Claus, my name is Jake, and I am six-years-old. I have a big sister called Anna who is tall and sometimes angry. I also have a dog called Tiger. This Christmas I need your help because I want something and I know you can get it for me."

Mrs Claus decides to come to the rescue

The video shows Mrs Claus – whose Twitter account biography describes her as "Head of Christmas Special Ops" getting ready for the special mission before flying a helicopter to Jake's house and leaving a present (but not before stealing the mince pies!).

On Christmas Day it is revealed that Jake asked for a new pair of shoes for his big sister, and as Anna hugs and thanks her little brother, the letter concludes: "You might think I don't like my sister very much but I do. I love her a lot and I want her to be happy at Christmas."

The ad ends as Santa comes home to find Mrs Claus pretending to sleep with a book entitled Fifty Shades of Red, then telling her husband she enjoyed a quiet night.

Little Jake writes Mrs Claus a letter

Fans were quick to praise the adorable video, with one writing: "You've pulled a cracker this year, loved it! Just magical #LoveMrsClaus."

"The real success of this ad comes from celebrating the gift of giving rather than advertising your own products - well done," another added.

The M&S trailer has swiftly followed John Lewis's Christmas advert this year, which shows a host of forest animals enjoying a little girl's Christmas present of a trampoline while she sleeps. Finally, her pet dog Buster manages to get on the trampoline and have a bounce, leaving the little girl and her parents watching in amazement.
