The biggest box office flops that destroyed careers overnight - how many do you remember?

Chris Hemsworth might be beloved as the golden-haired son of Odin from Marvel's Thor and the leading man of Netflix success Extraction, but he hasn't always been the most bankable star according to Blackhat's (2015) box office reports.

The hacker thriller lost $90 million while Chris' career continued to count disappoints such as In the Heart of the Sea, The Huntsman: Winter's War and Men in Black: International.

Matthew McConaughey became a fixture of the rom-com genre thanks to hits like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Wedding Planner, but he soon hoped to find success away from swoon-worthy silver screen projects.

As part of this move away from the romance genre, Matthew starred in 2005's Sahara, based on Clive Cussler's novel of the same name, as an explorer in search of a lost Civil War battleship. Sadly, it was more dud than box office dynamite: the film grossed just under $120 million, with an estimated production budget between $130 million to $160 million.

Five-season hit Friday Night Lights propelled Taylor Kitsch to mainstream fame and had plenty of fans (and Hollywood executives) hoping he'd make it as a certified star on the red carpet.

Unfortunately, his lead role in 2012 flick John Carter didn't do Taylor any favors, and neither did the infamous flop Battleship. The latter was produced with a budget of around $209 million to $220 million and grossed just $303 million to $313 million worldwide.

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence and Jurrassic World's Chris Pratt seems like the kind of powerhouse pairing on screen bound to make a fortune. But, while Chris has continued to enjoy success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jennifer took most of the damage for 2016 sci-fi feature Passengers.

After Passengers' underwhelming box office results were followed by 2018 thriller Red Sparrow's underperformance, Jennifer took an acting sabbatical and in recent years has made a comeback with No Hard Feelings (2023) and Die My Love (2025).

Halle Berry's career seemed almost untouchable after her Academy Award win for Monster's Ball (2001) and a starring role in X-Men (2000), but another superhero hit proved to be more of a mistake than a strategic next step.

Catwoman garnered a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and took home four Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture. It was also a bomb at the box office, costing $100 million to make and grossing just over $82 million internationally.

Good Will Hunting star Matt Damon is normally a bankable film asset, but in the case of The Great Wall, people were quick to criticise the casting decision, with Matt taking the role of leading man in a movie about ancient Chinese history.

Together with the film's formulaic CGI monster-fighting, the fantasy story failed to grab audiences. The Great Wall proved to be the first of several flops for Matt at the box office, followed by Downsizing and Suburbicon.

One of the biggest '00s couples, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, starred together in 2003's Gigli as a hitman and an assassin sent to track him, respectively. It wasn't until 2010 that Ben found success as a leading man in The Town, seven years on from Gigli.

The film was a definitive box office bomb, despite Bennifer's Noughties popularity, grossing just $7.7 million against a budget of $75.6 million. 

Rock of Ages might be a huge hit as a jukebox musical when you're sat in the theatre seats, but its on-screen adaptation didn't translate the beloved show with box office success. 

Tom Cruise has otherwise found success, thanks to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow, but Rock of Ages remains a mark on an otherwise bankable movie star status.
