Why the new Lily and James Potter casting proves to me that HBO actually cares about the books

HBO has confirmed they have cast James and Lily Potter for the new series of Harry Potter, with actors Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn confirmed to be playing the Boy Who Lived's parents.

While I've really been enjoying all of the casting updates in the lead-up to the new series, this one struck a chord with me - especially as it deals with a major issue - and shows to me, at least, that HBO are taking this reboot seriously.

While Jasper recently graduated from RADA in 2024, Hannah's 'playing age' on her Spotlight profile is listed as between 20 and 30. So what am I getting at with all of this extensive Googling? What I have discerned is that both actors are relatively young, which keeps things completely in line with the books. Lily and James were both only 21 when they were murdered by Lord Voldemort, leaving Harry an orphan.

Fans have long been irritated with the films' decision to age up the roles, arguing that their tragic love story adds more gravitas, but is also crucial to the story about the ruined lives of James and his fellow Marauders at such a young age. However, in the films, actors Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville took on the roles of Harry's parents, and were 43 and 34 years old at the time of filming respectively.

Looking back at the films, it felt like James and Lily's roles were treated as little more than extras (no offence, Adrian and Geraldine), and indeed, the books' author, J.K. Rowling, once revealed that she was even approached to play Lily.

She wrote: "The filmmakers did ask me to play Lily Potter in the Mirror of Erised scene in the first film, but I really am not cut out to be an actress, even one who just has to stand there and wave. I would have messed it up somehow."

By casting the roles at the correct age for the books, alongside the show's 90s aesthetic and the early trailer footage revealing that the series is set to include many details omitted from the films, HBO bosses have once again shown that they are approaching the show with book accuracy at the forefront of their minds.

It also doesn't hurt that producers are going into the series with full knowledge of just how much James and Lily will feature in the story, which wasn't so evident when the films were being made while the novels were still being released.

Because of this, it feels as though we have solid casting for all of the more emotionally wrought moments in the show where having a strong Lily and James pairing feels crucial, including Harry hearing his mother during the Dementor attacks, their appearance in the graveyard in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, appearing as teenagers in Snape's memories, and of course, appearing to Harry in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Ultimately, the latest casting news has given me more evidence, as a huge Harry Potter fan, that this series is setting out to right the films' wrongs. Even if the actor cast as Charlie Weasley has brown hair. Let's get him some hair dye, and on with the show!
