Grey's Anatomy star Sara Ramirez bid farewell to the hit TV show after ten seasons earlier this year, and now the 41-year-old has marked the milestone with a dramatic new look. The actress looked virtually unrecognisable as she revealed she has shaved her hair into an edgy buzzcut, a far cry from her trademark glossy shoulder-length style.

Sara Ramirez debuted an edgy buzzcut on Instagram

The You've Got Mail actress gave her Instagram followers a first glimpse of her new hairstyle, posting a striking selfie of her bold new 'do as she lay in bed, opting for barely-there make-up and looking casual in a black sleeveless top. "#AlreadyTimeForATrim #FastGrowingHair #HappyMonday," she simply captioned the image.

Sara shocked her fans earlier this year when she revealed that she would be departing from Grey's Anatomy, where she has been playing the role of Doctor Callie Torres since 2006.

"I'm deeply grateful to have spent the last ten years with my family at Grey's Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I'm taking some welcome time off," she released in a statement on her Twitter account, adding that she hoped to continue with the show's creator Shonda Rhimes on future projects.

"Shonda's been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations!" she wrote. "I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shandaland family!"

There are clearly no hard feelings from Shonda either, who also had kind words for Sara after the news of her departure first broke.

"Dr. Callie Torres came into  our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey," the TV producer said in a statement. "Sara Ramirez's performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland."
