The mini skirt has come a long way since it was first popularised in the 1960’s by British designer, Dame Mary Quant. Appearing in the window of her historic King’s Road boutique, Bazaar, it became iconic in this era and was inspired by the fashion she saw on the streets. She named it the mini, after her favourite car. Dead cute.

While the mini skirt has never gone out of style, it ebbs and flows with its popularity and thanks in part to It-girl favourite Miu Miu, it has experienced a triumphant resurgence.

A timeless staple yet quite an intimidating one to wear. It may be mini but it can have a mighty impact on any outfit and makes a bold statement. Whether it’s a night out with the girls or appropriate office attire, the mini can slot into any occasion, we promise.

Classic Co Ord

For an effortlessly chic, put-together look, make like Alicia Vikander opt for a co-ord. Pairing your mini skirt with a matching top or jacket is an easy way to tap into the trend. A stylish outfit but with zero effort required - that gets a big fat yes from us.

For summer, lean into brighter tones or vivid prints to inject some fun into your wardrobe, and can also be paired with staple denim pieces.

Keep it Simple

Minimalists love a mini too! If you're apprehensive about bold colour and pattern, stick to a classic neutral colour palette that you can easily slot into your existing wardrobe. And who knows, if you're feeling daring - maybe pep up the look with a zingy accessory.  the rest of your outfit to spice it up.

For days when you want to feel like a total bad ass, only leather will do. Make like supreme It-girl Chiara Ferragni with an itsy bitsy mini teamed with a matching jacket and fishnets.

Chanel's timeless tweed two-pieces are a part of fashion history for good reason. Tone down the rebellious nature of the micro mini by following suit in a grown up check print and pearls (your Grandma will approve, trust us.)

The preppy trend shows no sign of waning, so why not jump on board and team your pleated mini with a cricket jumper or rugby shirt, knee high socks and big private school energy. Ya dahling!

Eschew simplicity in favour of something a little more eccentric. The beauty of a maximalist mini means that you can just sling a sleek knit on with it and a pair of statement earrings and you're good to go.

Play With Texture

Texture, one of the great cornerstones of any great outfit if often overlooked in favour of silhouette and colour. But as Camila Coelho proves here, it can instantly uplift any ensemble. The floral detail here is perfectly countered by the menswear inspired suit and tie combo.

Go Itsy-Bitsy

It's summer! Why not! Take your itsy bitsy mini and team with a crop top a là Caroline Daur. Tights will temper the situation and make it (ever) so slightly more daywear appropriate, but this year we say if you want to wear it, go forth with our blessing.

Bubble Over

Bubble hems have had the most incredible resurgence in the past year. They're joyous to wear, adding a sense of playfulness to any ensemble. We love the colour clash here and any opportunity to wear our favourite accessory of all time - a red pair of tights.

Shine On

Any excuse to wear something metallic and we are on board. We love the Rabanne energy of the mixed metal chainmail mini seen here, especially when paired with a sensible pair of cracking knee high boots.
