WIth the England football team reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, there are more St George's flags flying across the nation than ever before. From houses to cars, the public are keen to decorate to show their support to the Three Lions team. Did you know that His Majesty King Charles III even has an England flag tribute in his own back garden? But this one is a little different…
The monarch's beloved Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire is one of his favourite places to be, and often where he spends weekends and holidays. He has lovingly restored it inside and out, including overhauling the kitchen garden which was in a state of disrepair when he purchased the property and land in 1980. When he embarked on the restoration, he decided to design the garden to incorporate the shapes of the England flag and Scottish flag, which makes up the overall shape of the Union Jack flag. The design is best viewed from above where the lines can be clearly seen.
Award-winning garden
Elsewhere in Charles' garden there's an award-winning feature - the carpet garden. This space is often described as an "outdoor room" and it was spearheaded by King Charles himself. The monarch personally designed the space alongside Michael Miller for Clifton Nurseries, drawing inspiration directly from a sketch he made of a treasured pair of Turkish carpets located inside his property. It has Moroccan and Turkish elements, and was originally built for the 2001 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where it won a prestigious Silver-Gilt Medal.
A special reunion
The special estate is cherished by Charles and it was the chosen location for an extra special reunion earlier this week. On Friday, Prince Harry and his family were hosted by the monarch and Queen Camilla.
For the occasion, Harry was joined by his wife, Meghan Markle, and the pair's two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. It's the first time Archie, seven, and Lili, five, have seen their grandfather since the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.
Despite explosive interviews and his bombshell memoir, Spare, Harry has expressed his desire for a family reconciliation. In a BBC interview in May 2025, the father-of-two said: "I would love reconciliation with my family; there's no point in continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has, he won't speak to me because of this security stuff."
