When Queen Camilla (then known as Camilla Parker-Bowles) married the then-Prince Charles in 2005, she gained access to a life of royal privilege, including getting to call palaces and royal residences home. However, she chose to retain her own private residence, Ray Mill House, located in Wiltshire. Now, her local neighbour is faced with two potential issues.
A Wiltshire Council Cabinet meeting, held on 8 October, raised the issue of road surface damage, as reported by the Gazette & Herald. The roads in the area are showing cracks due to the dry weather throughout the summer period. These issues are occurring even after a large repair scheme costing £5 million took place.
Additionally, neighbours have lodged concerns over future noise pollution in the area after plans have been submitted for a hotel renovation. In August, Bristol-based developer Boyce Group submitted plans to restore and convert a Grade II* listed property called Nonsuch House and its surrounding buildings into a luxury hotel.
It was purchased in February 2023 by Niall Leighton-Boyce, whose firm specialises in listed building restorations. If it gets the green light, the project is set for completion in June 2027. Proposed facilities include 50 guest bedrooms, a spa, a restaurant and bar, a yoga studio, padel courts, a boathouse, staff accommodation and an event space.
Queen Camilla lives a 10-minute drive away from the site, meaning noise won't be an issue for her personally, and instead she may be looking forward to a luxury destination close to her home.
Previous flooding at Ray Mill House
The royal has previously admitted that she has struggled with flooding at her countryside abode, so she could be set for more issues. Camilla previously opened up about the heart-stopping moment her beloved estate was waterlogged. Chatting with the Military Wives Choir, she shared how Storm Bert in 2024 turned her home into a "seaside," admitting, "Where my house is was underwater. You've never seen anything like it... couldn't see anything apart from a lot of birds sailing about."
Inside Ray Mill House
Camilla first purchased her cherished property in 1994 for £850,000 following her split from her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles. We have seen archive photographs inside the gorgeous rural retreat which boasts stables, an outdoor pool, and a fabulous terrace overlooking the grounds. The 79-year-old has also chosen her home to be the backdrop for multiple birthday portraits and magazine covers, proving it's likely to be where she feels most comfortable. She even showcased her homegrown peaches in a snap captured by photographer Chris Jackson.
