Copenhagen's stunning Amalienborg Palace is home to Danish royals King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark. Until now, their son, Crown Prince Christian, 20, was believed to be living with them, but it has been revealed that he has been granted his own private apartment within palace walls.

This revelation comes in an interview with the daily Danish newspaper, Politiken, where the prince spoke about his military enrollment at length.

Christian lives in his own apartment adjacent to Frederik VIII's Palace, which is believed to be an annex area that used to be an old workshop.

However, the royal won't spend much of his time there anyway, and that's because he normally lives at the Guard Barracks in Høvelte, in his role as platoon leader. Before this, he was stationed at the Guards Barracks in Slagelse.

In June, Christian was appointed a second lieutenant. His proud parents were present for the official ceremony where his mother was seen giving him a prolonged, affectionate hug.

The interview also touched on how he had initial nerves about being recruited, but he has settled into his new life. Part of his training has included carrying around 25 to 30kg of equipment while patrolling around 31 miles in 36 hours, just like his fellow cadets.

Recruits in Denmark can make up to £22,000 yearly, with a further £1,840 in allowances, with all of this money being tax-free. However, Christian has chosen to turn down his fee, instead choosing to live off palace funds.

In summer, Christian's sister, Princess Isabella of Denmark, also embarked on a military career. Following in her brother's footsteps, she has now started her initial military training.

Their father, King Frederik, has previously completed military training in all three services, including training as a frogman in the naval elite special operations forces, Frømandskorpset, where he earned the nickname "Pingo".

Inside Amalienborg Palace

The iconic Danish address is often heralded as the finest example of rococo architecture in Denmark. It is made up of four individual palaces which look identical from the outside, but inside each has its own unique story. It was originally built for and named after Danish aristocratic families in the mid-1700s.

The property is home to many artworks, including royal portraits, master paintings, and contemporary tapestries. Inside its walls there are pieces by top Danish artists, Tal R, John Kørner, and Kathrine Ærtebjerg.

Glimpses inside the walls, have shown us that it has grand double-height ceilings, impressive chandeliers and gilded features.
