Prince Charles has received an honorary award for his watercolours at the Florence International Biennale Exhibition of Contemporary Art, where 20 of his paintings are on display.

Other celebrity contributors include 1960s screen siren Gina Lollobrigida, whose sculptures will be on display. However, Prince Charles is one of only three people to have received the honorary award for contributing to the "life and spirit" of the biennale.

"By graciously contributing these lithographs he has shown his personal concern for contemporary artists who of course need all the recognition they can get," said professor John Spike, world renowned art critic and member of the judging panel. This year the event is dedicated to celebrating the cultural diversity between the 630 contributing artists.

"They really are excellent watercolours" he added. "His prints represent a show within the show. They have their own section very near the front of the entrance and are very much appreciated by those walking in."

Prince Charles usually sells his prints to raise money for charity, and to date has made around £33million for his charities from sales of some of his work.
