Sarah Ferguson plans to depart for war-torn Afghanistan to meet with workers from her Children In Crisis charity currently stationed in Kabul.

“As soon as I get clearance, I’m going to go because I think it’s important that you are not only the figurehead, but that you’re actually out there in the field supporting your people,” she revealed on Wednesday.

Teams from her UK-based charity are struggling to reunite displaced Afghan children with their families, while improving standards of health care and access to education in the country.

“The Taliban have very fundamentalist ideas about education… and they certainly didn’t want women and girls to have any roles at all,” says Sarah. “For me, as a woman who really believes in the power of a woman, I find it really so important to get our message out there.

“Education is the best way to ensure that Afghanistan does not repeat its history.”

Fergie launched the charity in 1993 following an emotional visit to Poland. During the trip the she met with children suffering from illnesses contracted as a result of industrial pollution and returned home determined to make a difference. Today Children In Crisis supports projects in a devastated Sierra Leone, as well as Belarus, China and Pakistan.

As well as boosting morale, Sarah presumably also hopes to spread some holiday cheer among Children in Crisis teamworkers, and will be taking along her family’s new Christmas card. For the first time since her 1996 divorce from Prince Andrew, the two appear together on the festive holiday greeting. In the past the card has been dedicated to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. This year the royal siblings are joined by their smiling parents.
