Former TV newsreader Letizia Ortiz has had plenty of practice in royal duties in the past few months, appearing with her future husband, Crown Prince Felipe of Spain, and his family at a number of official engagements.

The future princess further sharpened her skills on Thursday, taking her place alongside the heir to the throne and his parents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, at the opening of Spanish parliament.

Well-accustomed to the public eye, having once been an anchor on the evening news, Letizia seemed at ease as she mingled with her future in-laws, politicians and the newly-elected Spanish prime minster Jose Luis Zapatero. Elegant in a white pleated dress and jacket, she held on to the arm of her fiancé as she left the event, which was presided over by King Juan Carlos.
