Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit turned tour guide for a day, showing a group of small children round the royal palace at the kick-off of the 'open palace' season in Oslo.

The mother of two went round several rooms in the palace with the children, explaining the history of various exhibits, and making the whole experience memorable by weaving personal anecdotes into the history lesson.

"This is the christening dress that Princess Ingrid wore," she told them at one point, adding the much more contemporary tidbit that "Prince Haakon and I found it in a trunk in the attic."

Several of the young visitors, who were from a local nursery, had made a right royal effort for their special day out, donning tiaras or crowns to meet the future queen. Mette-Marit herself was low-key in a simple skirt and top as she guided the children round.

The 'open palace' season, which gives citizens the chance to view the interior of the building normally reserved for their royal family, continues until mid-August.
