Royal family recap: Thailand royals in mourning as King announces Birthday Honours List

David Hockney was a man of “irrepressible charm, talent and constant innovation”, King Charles has said as he paid tribute to “one of life’s true originals” in a post on social media following the artist’s death at the age of 88.

David is considered to be one of the most important contributors to the pop art genre, which took off in the 1960s. The star, who died at the age of 88, is also regarded as one of the most influential artists of both the 20th and 21st centuries.

The King's statement on the death of David Hockney came less than 24 hours before the monarch is due to mark Trooping the Colour alongside other senior members of the royal family. 

The ceremony marks the monarch's official birthday, but his actual birthday falls on 14 November!

Dame Helen Mirren is among the many names on the King's Birthday Honours list for 2026, which recognises people across the UK, from celebrities to ordinary people who have made a difference.

Dame Helen has been made a Companion of Honour for services to drama. There are only 65 Companions of Honour at any one time.

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi will became an MBE for his services to music and charity, and six of England's Lionesses footbal players, including rising star forward Michelle Agyemang, who at 20 is the youngest recipient on the list.
